HOW FAR AWAY IS UGANDA ANYWAY? September 4, 2012
I’m sitting on the airplane on the final leg to Uganda, exhausted, but wide awake, wondering to myself if Uganda has moved further away from the United States in the past year. This last part of the trip just seems to go on forever! We left yesterday morning at 11:45 and we arrive tonight at 9:45! So it really is like the song that never ends! I’ve been blessed on this portion sitting next to a woman from London who is going to Tanzania and Rwanda. She and I struck up a conversation from the start and she shared first hand what it was like to experience the London Olympics – needless to say it was very interesting.
As we exited the plane in Brussels I was the first of our group to leave the gateway. I followed the crowd and before I knew it I was in the terminal by myself while everyone else in the group went a different direction. My family would be proud. I did not sit down and cry! Instead, I looked at the departure board, found my gate and headed out in that direction. (For those of you who don’t know me well, I am severely directionally challenged). Liz, you may remember Terminal T is miles from anywhere else. And lo and behold, about five minutes into my trek there was the rest of my team! I was very happy to see them and have vowed to remain in the middle of the pack from this point forward. I may not fear lions, and tigers and bears, but I am deathly afraid of getting lost!
So now we are about an hour from our destination. It always seems like the planning stages of these trips goes on forever. I am ready to be there and see where it leads. I can’t wait to step foot again on Ugandan soil.

We arrived safely last night in Entebbe and were greeted at the airport by Lynda and Vicki. We all felt like we had been on the plane at least a week and were very glad to get our feet firmly planted back on the ground. We got our luggage with no problem and headed out to where we were staying for the night. I can honestly say I was asleep before my head hit the pillow. We got up this morning to a breakfast of eggs and toast, packed up the bus and headed out for Kampala where I got a wireless Internet card for my computer (I am online while on the way to Iganga!), and a phone. We ate lunch at a wonderful little restaurant and are now headed to our new home (The Mum hotel) for the next week or so. We are driving on red dirt roads again, my window is down and my camera is clicking away. I am happily anticipating getting there, getting settled and getting started.
Great talking to you, couldn't believe how you sounded like you were in the next room! Have fun seester, be safe, and oh yeah, 11/9/2013 it is officially!!!
ReplyDeleteThank the good lord that you rejoined your group at the airport, it would have been a terrible thing to be lost in a foreign land. So, take care of yourself, it was great talking with you today, call again when you can.
